FAQ

If I attend the program, what can I expect?

We know what it takes to start and accelerate a digital business. At Rockstart, this is what we do for a living. Our goal is to help you land and expand into The Netherlands and beyond. You’ll get the tools you need to take your venture to the next level. We’ll direct you to knowledgeable advisers and investors. We’ll connect you to stakeholders in the industry; Publishing houses, writers, retailers, libraries, distributors, retailers.

Only 5 startups are allowed in. So, why wait? Apply Now

Can you tell me about the program?

It’s rock-solid with a personal touch. You’ll participate in an intense and hands-on, 40-day experience at Rockstart, in the heart of Amsterdam, from 23 February 2017 till 30 March 2017. The program consists of a step-by-step curriculum combining common entrepreneurship principles with what’s happening in today’s digital and Lean Startup world.

The curriculum’s focus is on goal-oriented experiments tackling growth challenges in a systematic and practical manner. We’ll provide mentors and experiment sponsors to work side-by-side with you while you validate your channels into the Dutch market.

At the same time the program is highly custom. Only 5 startups are allowed in. We thus offer a unique level of attention and support to position your venture for maximum impact.

Are you in for a great venture? Are you seeking channels and growth in the Netherlands? Apply Now

Am I a good fit for the program?

We seek startups active in such areas as publishing automation, book retail, data analytics, authoring, book content development, and audience engagement. You want to firm and grow your presence in The Netherlands, and beyond. You also appreciate help in the area of channels to the market and accelerating growth.

Main criteria we use to judge fit for the program are:

  1. Your offering answers an actual and sizeable pain
  2. You have a clear vision of what you would like to achieve
  3. You can show traction and growth potential
  4. Your team is stable and willing to live in Amsterdam during the program period

What were the results of RtB-2015 edition?

Unlike RtB 2017, RtB 2015 focused on embryonic startups that wanted to establish problem/solution fit.

In terms of specific outcomes, we:

  • Hosted multiple networking events
  • Helped overcome startup specific challenges
  • Connected all startups to industry stakeholders which resulted into field pilots and business collaborations
  • Portrayed all startups in relevant media
  • Helped find follow-on funding for all startups

Renew the Book attracts some of the brightest minds in the publishing startup industry. We’re proud to work with them.

Are you next? Apply Now

I am by myself and don't have a team. Can I apply?

You need to have a team of least two people to join the program. It is difficult enough to build and grow a business, so you should have a partner to be able to make it a success. During the selection period we focus on team dynamics and it’s a critical component of the selection process. You and your teammates should have complementary skills and positive team dynamics to be able to make it work.

We have an idea on paper. Can we apply?

In order for us to help you get the most out of the program, we’re primarily looking for startups that have developed at least a MVP (minimal viable product), have customers or users and some traction. If your idea is still on the back of a napkin at the moment, we suggest you go to the next Startup Weekend or Startup Next and test it out. However, as long as you have a business vision by the end of our application process in December 2016, we’d love to hear it.

Where will the program take place?

The Renew the Book program will be based at Rockstart, in the centre of Amsterdam. You will be close to many leading book publishers, a vibrant community of avid book readers, as well as one of Europe’s most dynamic startup  environments.

Are there geographical restrictions in applying?

No. We are open for startups from all over the world. If you are from outside of the EU, we will support you in applying for the Dutch startup visa. Rockstart is one of the few accredited facilitators who can propose startups receive this visa.
